So I didn’t speak to Mike or Tiffany for the rest of the week. He called a few times but never left messages, and I never called him back. I just didn’t feel like dealing with him. Tiffany, on the other hand, didn’t call. Not that I blamed her. If I were her, I wouldn’t call me either.

I spent more time at the gym working off my frustrations and even asked a new girl, Kendra, out. Our Friday night date wasn’t quite a disaster, but I didn’t get past second base. I’d probably have to make a more serious investment with her before I got laid. She was cute, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend that much time or money on her. Besides, my mind and body kept drifting towards someone I refused to think about.

I was driving back to the frat house after dropping Kendra off at her dorm when my cellphone rang with a number I didn’t recognize. “Hello?”

“Jay?”

“Amanda? How’d you—?”

She sniffed.

Instantly, my heart rate tripled, and I took my foot off the accelerator. “What is it?”

Her voice sounded thick like she’d been crying. “I got your number from Mike’s phone.”

“Mike’s phone?” I echoed, ramifications bouncing in my head.

“We were in an … accident.”

“Are you,” I swallowed, “okay?”

“Bruised but nothing broken. The doctor already saw me.”

A wave of relief flooded through me, and then I felt sick. “What about Mike?”

“He’s in surgery.”

“Where are you?”

“Mainway Hospital, could you…?”

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

I didn’t bother to say goodbye before hanging up. What more could I say? I broke most of the speed limits and ran a few red lights crossing town. I called his parents while I drove. Not the smartest time to do it, but I didn’t want to waste time. Their voicemail answered. Typical. I left a message, not that I knew much. I’ll call them again later once I knew more.

Images of Mike dead or dying filled my mind. I’m an asshole. My last words to him were ‘fuck off’. What happened? How hurt was he? Would he survive?

It was after midnight when I screamed to a halt in the hospital parking lot and ran inside. A quick conversation with the receptionist got me headed in the right direction, and I soon found Amanda sitting, alone, in the trauma surgery waiting room. She sat with her elbows resting on her knees, head cradled in her hands. Her usually smooth hair curled and tangled around her arms, frizzy and tousled. Clothing askew, she shivered as if cold, but the room felt overly warm to me.

“Amanda?” I asked softly.

She jerked upright, eyes wide and bruises already darkening the left side of her face. “Jay.” Her lower lip trembled and her amazing eyes filled with tears.

I couldn’t help it. I ran to her, knelt at her feet, and gathered her in my arms. Unresisting, she fell into my embrace, head on my shoulder and sobbed. God it felt like a perfect puzzle piece clicking into place. She
